Ngā Kōrero mō Te Uru Karaka: Conversations on Te Uru Karaka
Te Whānau Rumaki o Te Uru Karaka
Newton Central's te reo Māori immersion unit, Te Whānau Rumaki o Te Uru Karaka, was established in 1996. The establishment of the unit was a response to a request by Leonie Pirihama and Tamsin Hanly, who were seeking an immersion option for their children. Te Uru Karaka was initially led by Hoana Pearson until she stepped out in 1998 to become Principal. From 1999, for the next 17 years, Te Uru Karaka was then capably led by Tamsin Hanly. Te Uru Karaka kaiako and whānau look back on this time fondly. Read their stories below.
