Calling 10 Kids Who Want To Learn All The Things

May 27, 2021

Media release: The Covert Theatre

The Covert Theatre has 10 scholarships open for 8 to 12 year olds who want to step up in a week-long performing arts intensive and learn vital life skills through improvisation.

The Perpetual Guardian Foundation’s Creative Arts Fund has made it possible for the Covert Theatre to offer 10 scholarships to disadvantaged young people to be a part of Boost; their school holiday program. The next program runs 12 – 16 July and finishes with a show for family and friends.

Wade Jackson is the artistic director for the Covert Theatre and says the generous grant allows the theatre to fulfill its purpose. “We are a grass roots to tall shoots organization. We actually opened for the first time in 2001 but this Theatre in Ponsonby is shiny and new so we have that in common with the kids – we have a bright future ahead of us! That is thanks to support like this from Perpetual Guardian that benefits not just the arts community but the whole community.”

In his day job Jackson is an author and also a high-performance coach for an ‘A to Z’ of successful Australasian businesses. But his career in improvisation exceeds his corporate career by many years. The Covert Theatre’s longest running troupe, The Improv Bandits, was established 23 years ago and celebrated their 20th birthday show with famed Canadian improviser Colin Mochrie at the Auckland Town Hall.

“We’re here performing world-class improv comedy in Ponsonby every week but at our heart the Covert Theatre trains children and adults to let go of their fears and step into the unknown,” Jackson says. “Improv gives you that confidence to know you can handle whatever comes next, in life and on stage.”

Young people or guardians of young people who would not normally be able to afford an intensive week of performance art training should apply via the Covert Theatre’s website and follow the ‘contact us’ link on the landing page. Enter the subject line “Boost me please” and write a short reason why you want one of the scholarships.  Expressions of interest for the scholarships close June 25.
